AURORA - Rodney "Rod" Alan Bayness, 54, of Aurora, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein after a short but hard-fought battle against cancer.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein. Burial will be Saturday, Sept. 15, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein, with military rites led by Ross Reid American Legion Post 9 Honor Guard of Oelwein.
Friends may call from 3 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Rod was born June 10, 1953 in Oelwein, the son of Roy and Anna Mary (Newton) Bayness. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1971 and enlisted into the U.S. Navy in August that same year. He. was honorably discharged in August of 1976. Rod married Becky Hillman on Nov. 17, 1990, at Maynard. He worked for Hancor for 17 years, Meredith Berda in Arizona, Amoco Foam of Oelwein, and the city of Oelwein from 1991 to 2007.
Rod enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi and fishing trips to Minnesota. He looked forward to his annual trip to Arizona to help son Jeff with the chili cook off, which Jeff won several times. Rod also enjoyed hunting, bowling and softball.
Survivors include his wife, Becky of Aurora; three sons, Jeff (Amy) Bayness of Casa Grande, Ariz., Jason Bayness of Casa Grande, and Kody (Pam) Quandt of Liberty, Mo.; a daughter, Kenda (James) Bronner of LaPorte City; nine grandchildren, Brittany, Michele, Kacie,Allyson Bayness, Brooke Bayness, Jonathan Bronner, Austin and Kaylon Quandt and Kristin Manns; special friends, Chuck and Kim Wessels, Dakota, Kyle and Emma; two sisters, Betty ( Gordon) Christiansen of St. Paul, Minn., and JoAnn Mesner of Cannon Falls, Minn.; one brother, Eugene (Shirley) Bayness of Olympia, Wash; and many aunts and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son John Bayness, an infant sister Beverly Bayness, and his parents.
A memorial fund has been established in his honor .
