JESUP — Gene M. Kester, 79, of Jesup, died at home Sunday, Jan. 6, following a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 15, 1928, in Troy Mills, son of Alfred G. Kester and Clara M. Bading Kester. On Sept. 9, 1953, he married Janette Marie Kerkove at St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Jesup.
Mr. Kester graduated from high school in Coggon in 1947 and served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean conflict. He farmed south of Quasqueton for five years before being hired as a milk handler and processor at the creamery in Jesup, retiring from AMPI Creamery in 1990.
Survivors include: his wife; two daughters, Debra (Tom) Andrews of Holbrook, Neb., and Barbara (Mike) Farrell of Vasellboro, Maine; three sons, Ronald (Debbie) and Richard “Dick” (Jeanette), both of Jesup, and Robert (Theresa) of Albuquerque, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; and three brothers, Glenn of Walker, Louis (Vaneta) of Manchester and Allen of San Antonio.
Preceded in death by: three brothers, Francis, Darrell and Richard; and a sister, Edna Wilson.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup. Public visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a 4 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
