JESUP - Funeral services for Donald R. Weisert were held Monday, Nov. 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, Jesup, with the Rev. Kenneth E. Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Crest Cemetery, with military rites by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup. The White Funeral Home, Jesup, was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Weisert, 84, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, following a short illness.
He was born Oct. 15, 1913, near Brandon, the son of Henry and Ava (Dixon) Weisert. He graduated high school from Mt. Auburn in 1931. He attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, from 1935 to 1941, and then served in the U.S. Army in the Aleutians and Europe from 1941 to 1945. He returned and received his jurist doctor degree in 1946 from the University of Iowa Law School. On Nov. 12, 1946, he opened a law practice in Jesup, where he worked until his death.
On Sept. 6, 1952, he married Lucille Lochead in Sabula. He attended First Presbyterian Church, was a 50-year member of the Lions Club, a member of Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342, active in Boy Scouts of America at local and district levels, and was presented the Silver Beaver Award in 1983 from the Winnebago Council. In 1984, he was recognized as the Adult Scouter of the Year, by the Iowa State American Legion. He was a member of the Buchanan County Iowa Bar Association, and in 1996, became a 50-year member of the Iowa State Bar Association.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; two sons, William J. (Madelene Sachs) Weisert of St. Paul, Minn., and James R. (Janet Astle) Weisert of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; one granddaughter; and one brother, Robert Weisert of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sara Elizabeth; seven brothers, Earl, Henry, Ray, Virgil, Merle, Al and Wayne Weisert and two sisters, Rose Johannesen and Lola Weisert.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Buchanan County and the Boy Scouts of America.
