JESUP - Funeral services for Velma M. Gerdes will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at First United Methodist Church, Jesup, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence.
Friends may call for one hour before services at the church Sunday. Parker Funeral Chapel, Jesup, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Gerdes, 79, died Thursday, Dec 11, 1997, at St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Jan. 31, 1918, in Jesup, the daughter of Courtney L. and Minnie C. Miller Bright. She graduated from Jesup Consolidated School in 1936 and Independence Junior College in 1939. On Oct. 19, 1940, she married Carl H. Gerdes at the, Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death in 1995. Mrs. Gerdes was active in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, church choir and numerous other projects. She was a member of Jesup First United Methodist Church for more than 70 years. When the new Methodist Church was built in Jesup in 1960, choir practice and the high school Sunday school class met in the Gerdes home at 534 Sixth Street until the church was completed. Mrs. Gerdes was a member of and served in offices of the United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include one son, Gary of Eau Claire, Wis.; two daughters, Marilyn Malloy of Webster City and Joann Bogguss of Cedar Rapids; and seven grandchildren, Nikki and Brett Gerdes, Jon, Monica and Justin Malloy, and Jordy and Katy Bogguss.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; two brothers, Rush and Keith Bright; and one sister, Mildred Kellogg.
Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Jesup.
