HAZLETON - Duane D. Morey, 83, of Hazleton, Iowa died on Wednesday morning, March 28, 2007 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence after a short illness with cancer.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Hazleton, with Pastor Jason Princer and Lay Leader Sheryl Gould officiating. Private family inurnment at the Hazleton Cemetery at a later date.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. A public Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home by Hebron Masonic Lodge 374 A.F. & A.M. Memorials may be given in his name to the Trinity United Methodist Church of Hazleton, or to the Cedar Valley Hospice at Independence.
Duane is survived by his wife Velma Morey of Hazleton; his daughter Darilyn (Robert) Ruse of Kendallville, Ind.; two sons, Larry (Peggy) Morey of Eau Claire, Wis., and Jerry (Judy) Morey of Hazleton; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marilyn (Dave) Appleman of Lewisburg, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Duane Dale Morey was born on Nov. 19, 1923 at rural Hazleton, Iowa the son of Clarence Alison and Mildred Marie (Kelly) Morey. He graduated from the Hazleton High School in 1941. Duane married Velma Elaine Johnston on Oct. 31, 1945 at the United Methodist Church in Fairbank. Duane and Miles Gardner farmed together for 42 years in the Hazleton area before Duane's son Jerry took over the farm in 1986.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hazleton where he held many church offices including trustee, was a member of the Hazleton Fire Department for 25 years and was fire chief for eight years, was past president of the Buchanan County Farm Bureau, and was a charter member of establishing the Buchanan County Zoning Commission. Duane was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge having served as past Worshipful Master at the Hazleton Waterfall Masonic Lodge 511 AF. & A.M., which later merged with Hebron Masonic Lodge 374 A.F. & A.M. in Oelwein. Duane and Velma spent the last 28 years wintering at Dade City, Fla. Duane enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing cards.
