Agnes Ward McAllister
INDEPENDENCE - Agnes Ward McAllister, 81, of Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, at the Buchanan County Health Center following a long illness.
She was born Jan. 23, 1926, in Independence, the daughter of Albert Henry and Beulah May (Tibbets) Ward. She graduated from the Independence High School with the class of 1944. She then attended Grinnell College in Grinnell. In March of 1948, she and Shadrach Eldon Davis were married at the First Methodist Church in Independence. They were later divorced. In 1980, she and John Howard McAllister were married in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He preceded her in death in 1995. She returned to Independence, in 1999.
Mrs. McAllister was a homemaker. She also was an avid reader and she loved to travel. Her pet dog, Victoria, was also an important part of her life.
Mrs. McAllister is survived by two sons, Lawrence (Gayle) Davis of Burlingame, Kan., and James (Marcia) Davis of San Francisco; one daughter, Joy (Brad) Davis Leininger of Mt. Clair, Va.; two stepsons, Mark (Bonnie) McAllister of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, and Ian (Donna) McAllister of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; and one stepdaughter, Evelyn Johnson of St. Catherine, Ontario, Canada. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and one sister, Beulah Harmon of Independence.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Albert Davis, and one brother, Charles Ward.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, with the Rev. Carroll Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements where visitation was held Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, 801 First St. K, Independence, IA 50644.
