Dennis E. Mendenhall
INDEPENDENCE - Dennis E. Mendenhall, 61, of Independence, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at his home following a sudden illness.
He was born Nov. 29, 1945, in San Jose, Calif., the son of Floyd and Beryl (Smith Stebbins) Mendenhall. After completing his high school education in Independence, Iowa, he earned his Associate's Degree at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the early 1960's. In 1974, he and the former Grace Wilson were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They were later divorced, Mr. Mendenhall was a line worker at the meat packing plant in Eddyville, until he was disabled in 1978.
Mr. Mendenhall is survived by three daughters, Angie Mendenhall of Louisiana, Denise Mendenhall of Troy Mills, and Darcie-Danielle Mendenhall of Dundee; two sons, Terry Mendenhall of Louisiana and Dorsey Wilson of Coggon; many grandchildren and one great grandson. He is also survived by six sisters, Linda Dillon, Doris McCluskey and Becky Jorgensen, all of Independence, Kaye Savago of Rowley, Ruth Templeton of Ames, and Lois Jokunsen of Holland, Mich., and four brothers, Randy Shaw of Council Bluffs, Steve Shaw of Winthrop, Wesley Mendenhall of Los Angeles, and Billy Mendenhall of Sunnyvale, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Stacy Mendenhall; one half-brother, Bob Mendenhall; and one stepbrother, Gene Shaw.
Public visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, where a military service begins at 7 p.m.
