CHARLES WROTEN
As a great shock to his host of friends over the county came the news that Charles Wroten had passed away Monday evening, September 9, at 7;30 o'clock in his home on the Elmer Nabholz farm, 3 miles east of Brandon. Mr. Wroten was first taken sick on Sunday morning about 1 o'clock. A physician was hastily summoned, but he passed away at the hour above stated. The cause of his death was peritonitis. On Saturday he had worked hard at his farm work, the day being excessively hot. He had apparently enjoyed the best of health before his brief, final illness of less than two days. Several years ago he had been operated upon for appendicitis. The funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist Episcopal church in Brandon. Rev. F.H. Wyrick officiated and burial was made in the Brandon cemetery. Charles Wroten was a son of Mr. and Mrs.. Jesse Wroten, of Independence, and in every sense a Buchanan county boy. hew was born in Fairbank township September 28, 1878, and made his home in this county practically all of his life, with the exception of being engaged in the restaurant business in Waterloo and Dubuque for some time. he was also in the same business in this city and Fairbank at different times. For several years he had devoted his energies to farming and only about a year ago he and his brother Homer sold a fine farm near Brandon. Later he rented the Nabholz farm, which he was operating at the time of his death. Mr. Wroten attended the Independence high school in former years. Only last November 1 he was united in marriage with Miss Irene Short, of Brandon. Besides his grief stricken bride of less than a year and the heart-broken parents, he leaves to mourn his death four sorrowing sisters and a brother. They are Mrs. John Derr, of Independence; Miss Harriet Wroten, of Lohrville; Mrs. A.J. Meythaler of Coggon, and Mrs. D.J. Van Gerpen, of Melbourne, and Rev. Homer Wroten of West Union, all being here to attend the funeral. The death of a young man like Charles Wroten in the prime of life is extremely sad. he was a faithful and consistent member of the Methodist church at Brandon; president of the Epworth League there, and a strong and active church worker, in which he will be sadly missed. He was possessed of that energy and ambition that does things. Of steady, industrious habits, coupled with executive ability and integrity, he was successful in his farm operations. His sterling worth won him a host of friends among all with whom he came in contact, and it has been truthfully said that everyone who knew him was his friend. to the sorrowing wife, parents, sisters and brother is extended the sincere sypmathy (sic) of everyone.
