Obituary from an Independence Newspaper on 27July1938

JESUP PIONEER DIED FRIDAY OF LONG ILLNESS: Jesup, Iowa, Special: Martin Alexander Wroten was born near Littleton, Buchanan county, Iowa, April 7th 1866. He was the son of John and Cecelia Wroten, pioneer settlers of the county. He was united in marriage with Nelle Miller on February 1, 1889, To this union were born nine children, five of whom, with the wife survive. They are: Mrs. Charles Ohls, Dunkerton; Mrs. Ben Lang, Jesup; Mrs. Wm. Wier and Mrs. Arthur Comfort, Waterloo and Cady Wroten, Dayton, O. There is also a sister, Mrs. George Sheridan, Waterloo, a brother Jesse Wroten, Seattle, Wash. ; 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Wroten served many years as local Justice of the Peace, and one term as mayor of Jesup. During his active years he was an auctioneer. He spent all his life in Buchanan county and died at his home in Jesup at 9 a.m. Friday, July 22nd 1938, after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, at 2 p.m. from the Parker funeral home in Jesup and burial was in the Littleton cemetery. Elza Robert and Leonard Brown sang with Mrs. Leonard Brown accompanying Pall bearers were Bert Cox, Fred Burrell, Claude Miller, Court Bright and John Duggan. The flowers were many and beautiful, among them being a large basket of mixed flowers given by the business men from Jesup. Those from away who came to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. George Sheridan, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Storm, Mr. and Mrs. George Sheridan Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Jay Gardner, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Miller and Vera May, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Edgar, Mrs. Anna Comfort, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rachuy of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Alton Manross, Oelwein; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Fuller, LaPorte; Mr. and Mrs. Orley Fuller, Brandon; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Biddinger, Mr. and Mrs. George Kroma of Otterville, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lang, Will Lang and Will Lang, Jr. of Winthrop.
