JOHN W. DERR July 7, 1914 - June 9, 2005
Independence - John W. Derr, 90, of Independence, died following a long illness, Thursday, June 9, 2005, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo. John was born on July 7, 1914, in Independence, the son of John and Lelia (Wroten) Derr. He graduated from the Independence High School with the Class of 1932. On October 12, 1940, he and the former Marian Burdetta Lenius were married in Independence. Mr. Derr farmed in Buchanan County and also was a machinist at John Deere and Co. in Waterloo for 24 years before retiring in 1979. He is survived by five daughters, Patricia Derr of Pleasanton, Calif., Priscilla (William) Killion of Richardson, Texas, Bonieta Lofstedt of Exeter, Calif., Joan Hall of Brandon, Celia (Larry) Webber of Arlington, Texas; and two sons, John R. (Suanne) Derr of Corrales, New Mexico and Gary Derr of Waterloo. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and one sister, Celia Campagna of Corte Madera, Calif. John was preceded in death by his wife in 1957; his parents; and two brothers, Judd Derr and Dale Derr. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2005 at the White Funeral Home in Independence, with Rev. Julie McCullough officiating. Burial was in Wilson Cemetery, Independence. White Funeral Home of Independence was in charge of the arrangements.
