Hazleton--Funeral services for Clarence E. Smith will b 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hazleton, with the Rev. Stephen Root officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mark Pell, hospice chaplian. Burial will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, Brandon with military graveside service provided by the Aurora American Legion.
Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Floral Hills Chapel Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church Tuesday.
Mr. Smith, 67, died at his home Friday morning, Oct. 17, 1997, of heart failure.
He was born June 21, 1930, in Iowa City, the son of Walter and Myrtle Fleming Smith. He served with the U. S. Army during the Korean conflict. On March 8, 1955, he married Pauline Kaiser in Savannah, ILL. He had been a maintenance worker at John Deere for 26 years. He was a member of Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post 30 of Independence. Mr. Smith was a longtime friend in the Hazleton Amish Community.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline; four sons, James of Las Vegas, Nev., David of Hazleton, Robert of Fort Campbell, Ky., Dennis of Marshalltown; six daughters, Sandra Shurtz of Cedar Falls, Stacey Smith and Dianne Gates, both of Aurora, Peggy Eilers of Hazleton, Kelly Smith of Reed Spring, MO., and Angela Ricchio of Oelwein; one brother, Gerald of Utah; 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
