Robert L. Quigley
WINTHROP – Robert L. Quigley, 78, Winthrop, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at Peoples Hospital Nursing Care Center in Independence after a brief battle with cancer.
Quigley was born on Aug. 28, 1918 in Independence, the son of John and Belle Elliott Quigley. He attended the Winthrop schools, graduating from high school in 1935. He attended Iowa State Teachers College, in Cedar Falls for two years. Quigley served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 until 1949. During World War II he flew a B-26 over Europe on 62 missions.
Quigley married Eileen Gerdes on Dec. 9, 1951 at the Methodist Church in Winthrop. He worked as a rural mail carrier and was active in Boy Scouts for more than 25 years. He served as Pack 104 Cubmaster, Troop 104 Scoutmaster and Wild River District Eagle Committee member.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at the Church of Christ United in Winthrop. The Rev. Bill Gardner will officiate. Burial will be in Fremont Township Cemetery, with private graveside services at a later date.
Special services will include a military graveside service. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, July 11, and until service time on Saturday, July 12, at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Survivors include two sons, Craig (Binky), Virginia; and Lance (Mollie) Fairfax; special friend Shirley Halstead, Quasqueton; and two granddaughters, Erin and Courtney, Virginia.
