Thelma L. Rommann
INDEPENDENCE - Funeral services for Thelma L. Rommann will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the Reiff Funeral Home, Independence, with the Rev. Mark Pell officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Rommann, 79, died Saturday evening, Aug. 16, 1997, at Peoples Memorial Hospital, Independence, after a long illness with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).
She was born Oct. 13, 1917, near Garrison, the daughter of John T. and Minnie M. (Burke) Atwood, Sr. On Nov. 30, 1936, she married James C. Rommann, in Waterloo. The couple farmed in the Independence area until retiring and moving to town in 1972. During her retirement, Mrs. Rommann worked at Verne's True Value and East Union Antiques. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Independence Garden Club and the Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include a brother, John "Tom" (Betty) Atwood of Independence; and many nieces and nephews, to whom she was a second mom, including Bruce Swonley and Beverly Knight of Fayette, Gene Niswonger of Madison, Wis., Mary Kangas of Independence, Melody Atwood and Tim Atwood, both of Marion.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James, Sept. 15, 1996; and two sisters, Edith Swonley and Isabelle Niswonger.
