INDEPENDENCE - Funeral services for Mildred S. Freebern were held Friday, Nov. 21, at the Hope Wesleyan Church, Independence, with the Rev. Tim McPherson officiating. Music was provided by Robert Howlett, organist, and Rev. McPherson, vocalist. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Winthrop, with grandsons, Andy McKinley, Rod Smedley, Cory McKinley, Brandon Freebern, Scott Freebern, Josh Freebern, Joel McKinley, Hal Freebern, Jr. and Miles Freebern serving as casket bearers. White Funeral Home, Independence was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Freebern, 72, died at her home Monday, Nov. 17, 1997.
She was born Nov. 28, 1924, in Winthrop, the daughter of Roy Ralph and Noi Mildred Hayes Halford. Following high school, she completed teacher's training and taught school briefly. She and Harland Lewis Freebern were married and later divorced.
Mrs. Freebern was a secretary at the Mental Health Institute and Hope Wesleyan Church, both in Independence, before retiring in 1995. She was a member of Hope Wesleyan where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a mentor at Independence Community Schools and, later fulfilled a personal dream by volunteering at the Brainard Indian Mission School in Hot Springs, S.D., as a house mother.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Ann Smedley of Denver, Colo., and Teri (William) McKinley of Woodbridge, Va.; two sons, Lee Roy of Cabot, Ark., and Rick of Olathe, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Arnold Halford of Winthrop; and one sister, Margie Soules of Stanley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Hal; and two brothers, Harlan and Nelson Halford.
