INDEPENDENCE - Funeral services for Robert William Vargason of McAllen, Texas, and formerly of Independence, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the White Funeral Home, Independence, with the Rev. Beverly Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the Hazleton Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m.Tuesday at the White Funeral home,Independence.
Mr. Vargason, 71, died Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, at McAllen Heart Hospital, in Texas.
He was born Sept. 17, 1926, in Hazleton, the son of Prentice Monroe and Alice Roberta (Jarrett) Vargason. On Aug. 21, 1946, he married Gwendolyn "Billie" Vernell Hyde in Warren, Ill. Mr. Vargason worked as an automobile mechanic at the Chevrolet garage, then in his own business (Bob & Don's Garage), then 20 years at the Ford garage, all in Independence. He retired in 1986. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Independence, and an active supporter of the Hildago Border Mission in Hildago, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Billie of McAllen; three sons, Ronald (Mary) Seeley of Roscoe, Ill., Robert Jr. "Bill" (Kiyoko) Vargason of Ankeny, and Randall (Ann) Vargason of Owatonna, Minn.; one daughter, Nancy (Robert) Richards of Fairbank; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marie Ludwig of Independence, Fern Bennett of Waterloo, and Mary Streeter of Spring City, Pa.; and a half brother, Marvin Mosher of Shellsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.
