HAZLETON - Howard H. James, 74, Hazelton; died Monday, July 7, 1997, at East Towne Care Center in Independence after a long illness.Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at the Hintz- Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein. The Rev. Richard Emery will officiate. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Hazleton. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the Hintz-Geilenfeld Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; children Ronald (Sue), Charles City; David (Connie), Hazleton; Karen (Tim) Horsfall, Waterloo; six granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, and four step great grandchildren.
He was preceded by both parents; his brothers, Calvin and Clark; a son, Terry; and a granddaughter; Jacqueline.
He was born Feb. 27, 1923, the son of Charles and Grace James. He was a 1940 graduate of Stanley High School, and a 1947 graduate of Upper Iowa. He married Lucille Alshouse on March 15, 1997, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He worked for Nel's Agri-Serv Co. and farmed.
During World War II, he served in the Navy. He was a member of Hazleton American Legion, was mayor of Hazleton in the early 70's, and a councilman for the city of Hazleton before becoming mayor.
A memorial fund has been established.
