INDEPENDENCE - Funeral services for Robert J. Ohl will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 19, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, with the Rev. Al Vorwald officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Duane Gray, Karl Fricke, Leo Kerkove, Charles Mormann, Ron Hood and Dave Becker as casket bearers. Honorary bearers will be Gary McClintock, Don Hoeger, Louis Fratzke and Louie Nuehring.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday and anytime Sunday at the White Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a 3 p.m. rosary, a 7 p.m. vigil service and an 8 p.m. K.C. rosary Sunday. Mr. Ohl, 65, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at Peoples Long Term Care Center, Independence.
He was born June 13, 1932, in Oran, the son of Albert Cyrus and Blanche Mahanna Ohl. He graduated from Oelwein High School 1951 and from Barber School of Cedar Rapids in 1952. On July 2, 1953, he married Patricia Louise Scanlan at St. John's Catholic Church. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1960, he became real estate and insurance licensed and later founded Ohl Real Estate and Insurance in Independence. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post 30, and the Council on Aging, the Independent Insurance Agents Association, Knights of Columbus council 4332, and the Fr. Paul J. Lavalette Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly in Oelwein. He enjoyed fishing and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; four daughters, Christine (Curtis) Robbins of Waverly, Mary Kay Ohl of Hutchinson, Kan., Deborah L. Ohrt of Waterloo, and Janet (Joe) Payne of Independence; four sons;
David R.(Danita) of Harris; Minn., Steven J.(Julie) and John P. both of Independence, and of Ronald A. (Janice) of Rowley;18 grandchildren;two brothers, Walter and Leslie, both of Oelwein; and five sisters, Daisey Strempke, Isabel McMillan, Ada Fleming, Laura Bates and Donna Fish, all of Oelwein.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mabel Campbell; and four brothers, Marshall, Philip, Clyde and LeRoy Ohl.
Memorials will be used for an educational scholarship trust fund.
