H. C. Wente, Bremer Resident Since 1853, Is Dead
EARLY MAXFIELD FARMER; HEADED BANK AT DENVER
Was 92; Former Denver Mayor; Funeral Thursday at Rural Church
Denver, Ia. - Henry C. Wente, 92, bank president for 30 years, former Denver mayor and resident of Bremer county for 87 years, died at 10 p.m. Monday at his home of complications of advanced age.
A pioneer resident, he came to Bremer county in 1853, when he was five years old, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christian Wente, being among the earliest settler in Maxfield township.
He was born Dec. 6, 1848, in Palatine, Ill.
Headed Bank 30 Years
He married Miss Sophia Schroeder March 3, 1872 in the Maxfield Lutheran church. They farmed a half-mile west of the church until 1898 when they retired and moved to Denver. Here he became a charter member and first president in the organization of the Denver Savings bank in 1901 and headed the institution for 30 years.
He served a number of terms as mayor of Denver, and was active in business and civic affairs.
Mrs. Wente died seven years ago, and six years ago his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Matthias, moved here from Waterloo to care for him. He had been in failing health for several years.
Rites in Maxfield Church
He is survived by the daughter; four grandchildren, among them E. H. Matthias, manager of Waterloo Dredging company in Waterloo, and 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the residence in Denver, and at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran church in Maxfield township, 3 1/2 miles northeast of Denver, in which Mr. Wente always retained his membership. Rev. John Baerman, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Maxfield cemetery.
