TRIPOLI - H. Jene Kirchhoff, 84, of Tripoli, died Tuesday, June 28, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 15, 1926, on a farm near Tripoli in Bremer County, son of Herman and Anna Pries Kirchhoff. He married Florine Redies on April 17, 1949, at St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church, Tripoli.
Mr. Kirchhof graduated from Tripoli High School in 1943 and had served as an aviation ordnance man third class with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a turret gunner in a torpedo bomber. He worked at Panzer Produce, Tripoli, and Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, before working for John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 12 years. He then worked as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1960 to 1988, along with driving a school bus for the Tripoli School District. He was a member of Faith United Church of Christ, Tripoli.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Michael (Marsie) of Atlanta, and Brent (Diane) of Waterloo; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Preceded in death by: a son, Kevin; two brothers, LaVerne and Earl; and three sisters, Oretta Fenelon, Florence Block and Ruth Korte.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith United Church of Christ, Tripoli, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Brandenburg-Krueger VFW Post 4013. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rettig Funeral Home, Tripoli, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
