WAVERLY - Harley Elmer Meyer, 93, of Waverly, died Saturday, April 2, at Waverly Health Center of natural causes.

He was born July 30, 1917, in Bremer County, east of Waverly, son of Fred H. and Mary Oltrogge Meyer. On May 4, 1946, he married Dorothy M. Bergmann in Farmersburg. She died Dec. 21, 2008.

Mr. Meyer graduated from Waverly High School in 1935, worked on his parents' farm, then served in the U.S. Army during World War II in North Africa (battle of Fon Douk), Sicily and Italy (battle of Anzio Beach). He then went to work for Wayne Hamilton's Auto Body Shop. In 1950 he moved to Oelwein, where he owned and operated the Esquire Tavern. He returned to Waverly in 1956 and worked for Howard Ritchie's auto dealership. In 1959 he went to work for Schield Bantam Co. (Terex Cranes) where he worked as a warranty supervisor, retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly.

Survived by: a son, Richard J. (Claudia) of Springfield, Ill.; a daughter, Kathryn (Richard) Magnall of Waverly; four grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Meyer of Waverly.

Preceded in death by: a daughter, Mary M. Meyer; two sisters, Luella Boevers and Louise Liebau; and three brothers, Carl, Alfred and Willard.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, with burial and military graveside rites in the church cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the church, Bartels Lutheran Chaplaincy Fund or charity of donor's choice.
