WAVERLY — Laura Louise Cooley DeBower, 56, of Waverly, died at home Sunday, Nov. 28, from complications of cancer.

She was born Nov. 1, 1954, in Waverly, daughter of Harley M. and Loretta L.G. Schaefer Cooley. She married Gary DeBower on Nov. 23, 2010, at their home in Waverly.

Mrs. DeBower graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1973, and while in high school worked at the Waverly Convalescent Home. She then attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology, Waterloo, where she studied to be a medical technician and activities coordinator. She worked at Bartels Lutheran Home, Waverly, from 1975 to 1999, where she started as a nurse's aide then was promoted to medical aide and later activities assistant and director of support services. In 1999 she went to work at the Waverly Hospital as the environment services supervisor, retiring in 2009 for health reasons.

Survived by: her husband; and two sisters, Carol Cooley of Waverly and Judy (Rick) Wheeler of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by: her parents; and a brother, James H. "Ugh" Cooley.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, with burial in Harlington Cemetery, both in Waverly. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice – Waverly Office or St. Judes Cancer Treatment for Children.
