WAVERLY — Ruth Aurelia Matthias, 97, of Waverly, died Sunday, Oct. 24, at Waverly Health Center from natural causes.

She was born June 29, 1913, in LaMoille, Ill., daughter of William and Agnes Faber Gross. She married Paul Carl Matthias on Sept. 20, 1935, at Clarion Lutheran Church, LaMoille. He died Sept. 5, 2003.

Mrs. Matthias graduated from Wartburg Normal School, Waverly. She was a former member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, where she served as organist. She was currently a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly.

Survived by: two sons, Paul Frederick (Dixie) of Tacoma, Wash., and Robert William (Luara) of Sparta, N.C.; a daughter, Ruth Ellen (Ted Benjamin) Matthias of Santa Monica, Calif.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a son, James David; and a sister, Eleanor Christensen.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly, with burial in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
