NEW HAMPTON - Marie Anna Mahlstedt, 89, of New Hampton, died Wednesday, June 12, at Linn Haven Rehab & Healthcare.

She was born Nov. 5, 1923, in rural Sumner, daughter of John and Louisa Warnke Meyer. She married Willis Mahlstedt on March 15, 1945, in rural Sumner. He died in 1982.

She attended country schools through the eighth grade and then worked for other farm families and also Winks in Sumner. In their early years, she and her husband worked together farming. In 1971, they moved into New Hampton where she started her career as a paid cook, working for New Hampton Care Center and the Sara Lee cafeteria until retiring. She also helped care for a special neighbor for years after retirement. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1959.

Survived by: two sons, Darold (JoAnn) of Clear Lake and Ronnie of New Hampton; four daughters, Diane (Duane) Nelson of Smithville, Mo., Dorann (Tom) Burgart and Deb (Steve) Dockendorf, both of New Hampton, and Bonnie (Tim Reed) Swenson of Winona, Minn.; a sister, Betty (Ray) Roder of Sumner; two sisters-in-law, Marlyn Meyer of Readlyn and Loretta Mahlstedt of Tripoli; a brother-in-law, Wesley Mahlstedt of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: her parents; a brother, Raymond Meyer; three brothers-in-law, William, Wendell and Wilbur Mahlstedt; and two sisters-in-law, Nora and Norma Niemeyer.

Services: 6 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton, with burial in New Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

One of Marie’s most memorable moments was celebrating her 80th birthday with her 102-year-old mother in attendance. Most especially she enjoyed cooking each of her family member’s favorites, quilting and gardening.
