Esther Ida Helen Heiser, age 90, of Waverly, died Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa.
Esther was born on October 15, 1922, Horton, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Hulda (Propp) Schilling. She was baptized November 12, 1922 and confirmed on April 14, 1935 at the United Church of Christ. Esther attended Horton School graduating from the 8th grade. On November 17, 1940, Esther was united in marriage to Robert Leonard Heiser at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Parsonage in Waverly. The couple farmed in Bremer County until they moved to Waverly in 1968, at which time Robert went to work for the City Water Department. Esther enjoyed her life as a homemaker, living in her home until December of 2011, when she moved to Bartels due to failing health.
Esther was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. She enjoyed fixing meals for the farm hands, family, and visitors. She was known for her chocolate cakes, pies, and biscuits. She loved fishing and always caught the first fish. She embroidered, made afghans, gardened, played cards, watched the Chicago Cubs, and loved to go dancing. However, what she enjoyed most was spending time with her family; she was a dedicated wife and mother. She was very loyal, kind and hard working.
Esther's memory is honored by her two daughters, Mary Jane (Russell) May of Tampa, Florida and Donna Mae (James) Bruhn of Dike, Iowa; a son, Roger (Sharon) Heiser of Janesville, Iowa; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Alice Schilling of Nashua, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert on August 19, 2004; a sister, Lenora Meyer; and two brothers, Harlan and Wilbert Schilling.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 28, 2013, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will follow at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013, where the family will greet friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Radio Broadcast Fund, Cedar Valley Hospice or Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.
