Robert M. Bigelow, 76, of 2677 Edgebrook Drive, Waverly, Iowa, died early Tuesday morning, March 31, 1998, at his home from complications of cancer.
Robert was born on July 13, 1921, in Bassett, Iowa, the son of Ernest Clayton and Huldah (Case) Bigelow. Bob attended school at Bassett and graduated from the Nashua High School in 1940. Bob entered the U.S. Navy during W.W. II on June 7, 1942 and following his discharge from the service on December 8, 1945 he returned to Nashua. On January 12, 1946, Bob was united in marriage to Marilyn L. Dixon in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple moved to Waterloo where Bob started working for the Iowa Public Service Company. In 1948, the couple moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where Bob attended Smith Barber College. After his graduation, the couple moved to Nashua where Bob went into the barber business with Bill Olson for the next three years. He then attended Linotype School in Charles City, Iowa and following his schooling the couple moved to Grinnell, Iowa, where Bob was a Linotype Operator for the Herold Register Newspaper. In 1955, they moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Bob went to work for the Allbee & Son Printing Company. The couple moved to their present home north of Janesville in 1971. In September of 1980, Bob went to work for the Maintenance Department of the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly. He was injured in 1982, and was forced to retire. Following his retirement, Bob & Marilyn became involved with knitting, where they showed many of their crafts at different shows around the area. Bob was known to many as "Gramps" at most of the craft shows.
Bob was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, and also a member of the Bradford Masonic Lodge #129, A.F. & A.M. in Nashua.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Waverly, Iowa, one daughter, Wanda Michaelsen of, Honolulu, Hawaii; one granddaughter, Caya Senna Michaelsen of Seattle, Washington; three sisters, Mrs. Ray (Anna) Usher of Nashua, Iowa, Evelyn Taylor and Mrs. Ralph (Wilma) Crandall all of Charles City, Iowa; one brother, Harold Bigelow of Sheridan, Wyoming, two sisters-in-law, Marie Bigelow of Nashua, Gloria Bigelow of Costa Mesa, California, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Linda Jo Bigelow in 1968, and four brothers, Stanley in 1971, Allen in 1974, Bert in 1996 and Donald in 1997.
Burial is in the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
