Herbert E. Zelle, 77, of 818 6th St. N.W., Waverly, Iowa, died early Wednesday morning, December 21, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from complications of cancer.

Herbert Edwin Zelle, son of Edwin and Doralina (Brandt) Zelle, was born on March 5, 1928 in Waverly, Iowa. He was baptized on March 25, 1928 and confirmed on March 22, 1942 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. He attended St.Paul’s Christian Day School and graduated from the Waverly High School in 1946. After graduation he worked on the family farm.

On August 8, 1950 he was united in marriage to Elinore M. Wiebke at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in DeWitt, Nebraska. He started farming on his own and then was called to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict on June 26, 1952. After two years he was discharged and resumed farming the family farm.

To this union four children were born. Barbara, Mrs. (Jim) Anderson, Waverly, Pamela, Mrs. (Dale) MacNaughton of Kingwood, Texas, Douglas (Cindi) Zelle, Waverly, Merrilee, Mrs. (Don) Betts, Cedar Falls. He has 8 grandchildren, Meganne and Christine Anderson, Waverly, Ian and Shannon MacNaughton, Kingwood, TX, Lindsay and Amanda Zelle, Waverly and Joshua and Spencer Betts, Cedar Falls. His wife Elinore, passed away on June 11, 1999.

Herb was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. He served on the Church Council and various boards of his church. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Bremer Co-op Creamery and the Farmer Co-op Co. Herb truly loved the out of doors, and he enjoyed farming to the end.

On July, 12th, 2003 he was united in marriage to Dorothy H. Juhl at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly.

Herb is survived by his wife, his four children and eight grandchildren. Also step-daughter, Jane (Rick) Juchems of Plainfield, step-son, John (Anna) Juhl of Park City, Utah, step-son, Edward (Gayle) Juhl of Hudson, foster step-son, Herman (Darla) Radke of Muscatine. He is also survived by also 6 step-grandchildren two brothers Harold (Ramona ) Zelle of Waverly, The Rev. Donald (Velma) Zelle of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; and one sister, Mary Ann & (The Rev. Donald) Johnson of Davenport, Florida. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Elinore; and one grandson, Jeremy Betts.

Celebration of Life Services will be held on Friday, December 23, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Burial with Flag Presentation by Am. Legion Post #176 will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran School or the charity of their choice.
