Mathilda ''Tillie'' Vogel, 102, of Waverly, Iowa, died Sunday afternoon, July 6, 2003, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community of natural causes.

Mathilda was born on August 18, 1900, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Frederick & Marie (Schmidt) Eickelberg. She was baptized on September 9, 1900 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, Iowa, and confirmed in the same church on April 5, 1914. She graduated from the 8th grade in Immanuel Lutheran Day School in Waterloo, and when she was 12 years old, following the death of her father, she went to work for her uncle John Eickelberg on his farm near Dunkerton. She also worked as a hired girl for nearby farm families, and enrolled in and completed a course in tailoring. She enjoyed sewing for friends and relatives and took pride in her work.

On January 15, 1922, she was united in marriage to Ernest A. Vogel in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger. The couple lived in Klinger until 1955 when they moved into Waverly. She became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Home on August 14, 1989.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly, and a member of the W.W. I. Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Arleen D. and Robert E. Christian of Seattle, Washington; seven grandchildren, John Lemke, Mark Lemke, David Christian, Ann (Christian) Lindekugel, Rebecca (Christian) Andersen, Lois (Christian) Erickson and Julie (Christian) McKern; and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernest, who was called by his Lord to eternal rest at the age of 100 on October 28, 1991, three sisters, Clara Eickelberg, Dora Matthias, and Elenore Hesse; and three brothers, Walter and Rev. Theodore Eickelberg and Martin in infancy; and a daughter and son-in-law, Elenore Ann and Robert J. Lemke.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 11, 2003 at 1:30 P.M. at St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Larry Sipe officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Klinger. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2003, from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community or the donor's choice.
