Burdett O. Briner, 87, of Waverly, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center, Shell Rock, Iowa, of cancer.

He was born on January 22, 1915, in Janesville, Iowa, the son of Sherman and Helen (Duenow) Briner. He graduated from the Plainfield High School in 1932 and worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps until 1935, when he moved to Waverly.

On December 24, 1937, Burdett was united in marriage with Doris L. Lynch in the First Methodist Church, Waverly. Burdett was inducted into the US Army on May 26, 1944, and served his country during WWII. Following his discharge on February 7, 1947, he returned to Waverly and went to work for the Caphenin Chemical Company. Mr. and Mrs. Briner later became sales managers for the World Book Encyclopedia in Hampton and Fort Dodge, Iowa. After leaving World Book, Mr. and Mrs. Briner owned and operated a general store in Fox Creek, Wisconsin, then became realtors in Fox Creek and in Bayfield, Wisconsin. The couple moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota when they retired. Doris died on September 28, 1984, and in 1986 Burdett returned to Waverly. During the next 15 years, he was an active volunteer at the Waverly Municipal Hospital.

Burdett is survived by one son and his wife, K.D. and Sharon Briner of Cedar Falls, Iowa and children, Karla Schaeffer and Kristen Bender; daughter-in-law, Deborah Briner of Lincolnshire, Illinois, and children, Melinda Perez, Michael Briner, Emily Briner, Elizabeth Briner, daughter-in-law, Glenna Stephens-Briner of Roswell, Georgia, and children Philip Briner, Benjamin Briner, Kathryne Briner and Allison Briner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; two sons, Monte Briner in 1998 and Richard Briner in 1999; and his brother, Romayne Briner.

There will be public visitation at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, on Friday, July 26, 2002, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Following a private family burial, there will be a public memorial service on Saturday, July 27, 2002, 10:00 am at Heritage United Methodist Church, Highway 3, West of Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the Waverly Municipal Hospital Foundation.
