Lawrence “Larry” H. Schunk, 55, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 15, 2003, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, of leukemia.

Larry was born on June 8, 1948, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Gerald & Mable (Oleson) Schunk. He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1966 and went to work for Chamberlain Manufacturing in Waterloo.

On July 15, 1967, he was united in marriage to Mary Jo Fails at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. The couple stayed in Waverly where he began working at Carnation. Larry then served in the United States Army from 1968 until 1970. In 1971, Larry and Mary Jo bought a house in Shell Rock, where they have lived since. In 1977, he completed his degree in Auto Mechanics from Hawkeye Technical College in Waterloo. Larry then worked as a mechanic at Dick Witham Chevrolet, Heiple Buick and John Deery. Larry had also worked at Standard Battery and most recently at O’Reilly’s Auto Parts in Waverly.

Larry enjoyed cars, drag races, genealogy, collecting mantel clocks, was an avid fan of Tripoli High School football and basketball, but most of all, enjoyed spending time with his family.

Larry is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, of Shell Rock, Iowa; two daughters and their spouses, Christie & Chris Schmidt of Guttenburg, Iowa and Jennifer Schunk & Jason Mobley of Bloomington, Illinois; one son and his spouse, Jerry & Crystal Schunk of Waterloo, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Seth Schunk, Nick Schwartz, Levi Mobley, Lucas Schwartz, Zach Bruns, Shianna Weikert, and Jeffrey Mobley; two brothers, Jerry & Branda Schunk of Clarksville, Iowa and Randy & Kathy Schunk of Shell Rock, Iowa; and three sisters, Judy Young and her spouse, Bill, of Alton, Missouri , Patty Kaiser and her spouse, Jon, of Waverly, Iowa, and Kathy Carroll of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy, Terry John.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 20, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday with a 7:00 pm scripture service at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the family.
