Oelwein Daily Register 1 Feb 1925

Mary Meier, fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Meier was born June 11, 1861 near Denver, Bremer Co. Iowa. Her childhood and her youth were spent on the farm of her parents. First at Denver, then at Grove whill, Iowa. At Grove Hill, she grew to young womanhood. After her marriage to Eugene Hempseed on 29 Mar 1881 by a J.P. at Grove Hill, Franklin Twp, she lived various places. Their marriage was blessed by children who mourn their mother's death. The grief stricken children are Mrs. Lavina Mersch, Fairbank; Mrs. Pearl Mersch, Masonville; Mrs. Tom Gaitley, Mrs. Hazel Shafer and Owen Hempseed, all of Oelwein. Mrs. Michaels parents and one sister have preceded her to eternity.

Nov. 17, 1902, she was united in marriage to Herman Michaels. This union was a most happy one. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Michaels moved to a farm near Maynard, then at Sumner. Somewhat leter they moved to Oelwein where they made their home until her death.

For about a year Mrs. Michaels had been in failing health. She sought medical care, but only temporary relief was found. In March of last year an operation was deemed necessary. She sumitted to an operation at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, IA. After weeks of intense suffering she seemed on the way to convalescence. However, her condition again became grave. In October she was again laid low. Nov. 12, she returned to her home. Weeks of suffering followed. Neuritis together with a malignant growth slowly sapped away her strendth. For 14 weeks she was bedridden and pain stricken. During the last 4 weeks the angel of death hovered over her bed. On Feb. 1, at 2:15 a.m. she heard the call of the great physician and entered the mansions above. Calm and peaceful was her departure.

Though hard beset to forsake the church which she had learned to love and to prize, she remained true to her confirmation vow. True even in death.

She leaves to mourn her loss, besides her grief stricken husband and children, eight grandsons and eight granddaughters, one great granddaughter, 2 sister: Mrs. Emma Wehrmacher and Mrs. Bertha Heinemann of Sumner and a host of relatives and friends.

Mrs. Michaels was a kind and affectionate woman, whose greatest pride was her children and grandchildren and her church. She was a devout Christian. She was sympathetic, long suffering and forgiving. She was fond of the beautiful and the good. May she now be surrounded by it in heaven. May heaven dry her tears and bless her with everlasting happiness.

Last services conducted from the family home on Feb. 2 at 1 pm and from the Lutheran Church at 1:30. Rev. E. J. Braulick officiating. Interment was in Grove Hill Cemetary, Readlyn, Iowa.
