Laurin Sylvester Boyce was born at Little Falls, Herkimer county, N.Y., September 11, 1826. When quite young he removed to La Ported, Ind., where he was married to Miss Susanna Gline in 1848. Two children were born to this marriage, Emory M., who resides in Waterloo, Ia, and Addison E., who died in California in 1881. His first wife died in 1857 and in 1861 he was again married to Miss Adah E. Weston at La Porte, Ind. Early in life he was converted and became a member of the M.E. church. At the age of 16 he was licensedd to preach. In 1862 he enlisted in the 72d Indiana regiment, and remained in the service until the end of the close of the war, a part of the time acting as hospital steward. After the war he moved to Iowa and again commenced work in the ministry, preaching at Fredericksburg, one year and at the Frederika three years, when loss of voice compelled him to give up that work. He then resumed the practice of medicine, which he followed for several years until health failed, and for fifteen years he has been a quiet sufferer "only waiting," as he told the writer "for the Master's summons to come up higher," which came November 21, 1901, and the spirit, set free from its wasted tenement, went joyfully home. His wife and four children survive him and were all present at his funeral, which occurred Saturday, November 23d. The surviving children are: Emory M., of Waterloo, Ia, Mrs. F.G. Ager, of Frederika, Laurin S., of New Hampton, Ia, and Oliver E., who lives at home. Rev. W.E. Ross, of Waucoma, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. James Bird, conducted the services at the church; then the G.A.R. Post took charge of the remains and conducted the services at the Alcock cemetery.
