BURIED WITH MILITARY HONORS
On Wednesday afternoon the remains of Lawrence J. Shaffer were buried in Harlington cemetery with full military honors by Waverly Post, American LEgion.
Lawrence was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shaffer and was born in Waverly, Iowa, October 13, 1893, having reached the age of 27 years 4 months and 25 days.
He was reared in this city and made this his home until about twelve years ago, when he went to Ten Strike, Minn., at which place he continued to live up to the time of his death, with the exception of the period he served in the army. He entered the service from Minnesota and served overseas with Co. B. 23rd Enginers, for one year. He was honorably discharged from the service about July 1, 1919, at which time he came to Waverly and spent about six weeks visiting his mother and brother and sisters, then retuning to Ten Strike and remained there until his mother went there last week and accompanied him to Waverly where he entered the hospital last Friday. An operation was performed Monday morning for cancer and tumor, but he lived only about three hours, when death relieved him of his terrible suffering.
He is survived y his mother, Mrs. Kate Shaffer, one brother, Carl Shaffer, four sisters, Misses Bessie, Clara and Ruth, of Waverly, and Mrs. Pearl Bryant of Ten Strike, Minn.
Brief funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon, followed by services in the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. Arthur M.S. Stook. Members of Waverly Post, American Legion, acted as pall bearers and furnished an escort to the cemetery, where they conducted the services at the grave. A firing squad fired the volley over his grave, after which taps were sounded.
