Joe Shaffer died on Saturday, Feb. 7. One week before his death he was taken sick with appendicitis. An operation was performed on Sunday, Feb. 1. For a few days he seemed to be getting better, and his friends hoped he would get well. On Saturday he had a violent attack of hiccough, and he died soon afterwards. He was buried Sunday, Rev. J.E. Brereton and Rev. W. Ward Smith officiating. Joe Shaffer was born near Monroe, Wis., in 1859. He came to Waverly in 1866. Nineteen years ago he was married to Miss Kate McDonald, who survives him with six children, the youngest six months old and the oldest, a daughter, 18 years of age. Joe Shaffer was an industrious good man and, though poor, all who knew him were his friends.
