Death of Bertis E. Shaffer.
The death messenger has come once more and called from our midst one of our young people. Bertis E. Shaffer was born in Waverly, Jan. 18, 1881, and died at her home here, Aug. 23, 1904. This has always been her home. It was here she was educated, graduated from the Waverly high school in the spring of 1899. Scarcely had she finished her high school work when she began to teach, a work in which she was eminently successful. She always entered with earnestness into her studies and her school work. Soon, however, her health began to fail, and she went to Colorado last September. After 8 weeks rest she was teaching again, and apparently regaining her health. Last April she was summoned home on account of the serious illness of her father, the late Geo. Shaffer, who longed to see her, and whose death occurred a week after her arrival. Since then, in spite of every effort, and of her own brave fight, she gradually failed until the end peacefully came, Tuesday morning, Aug. 23. She leaves a mother, a sister and eight half brothers and sisters. The funeral service will be held this Thursday afternoon at her mother's home. The religious services will be conducted by Rev. D. I. Coon, pastor of the Baptist church of this city.
