Ethel Irene Briggs, 97, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Horton and Fairbury, Neb., died Thursday, Jan 13, in St. Petersburg.

She was born Nov. 27, 1913, near Dike in Grundy County, daughter of Charles W. and Letha McCann Woodman. She married Elwin Edward Briggs on May 2, 1934. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Briggs attended Dike Consolidated High School. She and her husband farmed briefly in Douglas Township. Later the couple purchased the Horton Store, which they operated until 1960. She was a member of Horton Baptist Church.

Survived by a daughter, Phyllis; a son, Darrell; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Carol (Frank) Sherman and Esther (Clifford) Sorensen and a brother, Harold Charles Woodman.

Services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Horton Baptist Church with burial in Horton Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, Nashua.
