Bradford, D.S., M.D.

Dr. D.S. Bradford, who opened an office at Janesville in the spring of 1869, has here practiced the profession of medicine and surgery throughout the intervening forty-four years and has been the only permanent physician of the town during that entire time. His birth occurred in Scholarie county, New York, in 1840, his parents being the Rev. Sylvester and Polly A. Bradford. The father passed away in 1868 and subsequently the mother and other members of the family came west to Iowa, settling in Janesville, Bremer county, where the demise of Mrs. Bradford occurred in 1906.

D.S. Bradford attended the schools of his native state in the acquirement of an education and prepared for the practice of his chosen profession as a student in the Albany Medical College of Albany, New York, from which institution he was graduated in 1866. He then opened an office at Rock City Falls, New York, and there practiced medicine for three years, on the expiration of which period he came to Bremer county, Iowa, locating at Janesville, which has remained the scene of his professional labors continuously since. Dr. Bradford is widely recognized as an able and successful representative of the medical fraternity, his practice having steadily grown as he has demonstrated his skill in coping with the intricate problems which continually confront the physician in his efforts to restore health and prolong life. It is a significant fact that he has been the only permanent doctor in Janesville since the year of his arrival. He acts as local surgeon for the Illinois Central Railroad and is likewise president of a pension examining board. With the progress of the profession he keeps in close touch through his membership in the Bremer County Medical Society, the Iowa State Medical Society and the American Medical Association.

In February, 1891, Dr. Bradford was united in marriage to Miss Lorette Mallory, a native of Illinois, who came to this state with her parents in 1855, when still but a child. She was one of a family of six children but has only one surviving brother, William Mallory, who is a resident of Chicago, Illinois. She taught school for some years prior to her marriage and also served as postmistress of Janesville for a period of nine years. Her father, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church, passed away in 1856, and her mother subsequently wedded Henry Morehouse, likewise a preacher of the same denomination, by whom she had two daughters: Harriet, the wife of F.D. More, of Shelton, Nebraska; and Bertha, who gave her hand in marriage to H.R. Hull, of Kirwin, Kansas. The demise of Henry Morehouse occurred in 1875, while his wife was called to her final rest in 1899. Dr. and Mrs. Bradford have one son, Herbert F., who was born in 1892 and is a graduate of a business college. He wedded Miss Blanche McDougal, a daughter of Neal McDougal, and maintains his home in Davenport, Iowa.

Dr. Bradford gives his political allegiance to the republican party but has never sought nor desired office as a reward for his fealty. He is a worthy exemplar of the Masonic fraternity and has passed through all the chairs in the lodge at Janesville, in which he served as master for fifteen years. His religious faith is that of the Methodist Episcopal church, and those who meet him professionally or socially entertain for him warm regard in recognition of his sterling personal worth.
