John W. Zwanziger, a successful druggist of Frederika, was born in Grant county, Wisconsin, July 18, 1868, a son of William and Catherine (Faite) Zwanziger, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Wisconsin. The father went to that state with his parents when he was two years of age and there grew to manhood, later engaging in agricultural pursuits in Grant county. In 1870 he moved to Bremer county, this state, and settled on a farm in Polk township, upon which he resided thereafter for thirty-three years. He then retired from active life and moved into Nashua, where his death occurred October 28, 1909. His wife survives him and makes her home in Nashua. To their union were born eight children: John W., of this review; Margaret, the wife of William Stevens; Charles, living retired in Waverly; Michael, engaged in farming in Bradford township, Chickasaw county; Orpha, the wife of R.L Cagley, of Nashua; Fred, who died at Fargo, North Dakota, in 1902, at the age of nineteen; Roy, residing in Glendive, Montana; and William, who lives with his mother in Nashua.

John W. Zwanziger spent his childhood upon his father's farm in Polk township and acquired his early education in the district schools of that locality. He afterward studied pharmacy at Highland Park College, Des Moines, and upon laying aside his books engaged in the drug business at Frederika in partnership with Dr. E. Dunklebury, now of Waterloo. Their partnership continued for four years, after which Mr. Zwanziger conducted the business alone for some time. Later he disposed of the enterprise and worked for Charles Golding for some time, after which he opened the store which he still operates. He carries complete lines of drugs and stationery and has built up an extensive patronage, accorded him in recognition of the high quality of his goods and his conscientious business methods.

Mr. Zwanziger married Miss Jennie Pickle, who was born in Green county, Wisconsin, and they have become the parents of two children: Everett, aged nineteen, a clerk in the Bank of Frederika; and Macieda, aged seven. The parents are members of the Methodist Episcopal church and Mr. Zwanziger gives his political alliance to the democratic party. He served as township clerk for thirteen years and is now a member of the school board. He is one of Frederika's most enterprising and progressive business men and his straightforward dealing, together with his industry, have won him an excellent reputation and enrolled him among the substantial business men and desirable citizens of this community.
