Bernard Anderson, 81, 215 13th St., Boone, died Saturday at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames of renal failure. He was born March 12, 1920, in Pilot Mound, the son of Edward and Bernice (Buttolph) Anderson. He married Gladys Swanson April 6, 1040, in Warroad, MN.

He graduated from Pilot Mound High School in 1937. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard, then served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was stationed in the South Pacific, China and Okinawa and received the Purple Heart for wounds from action in China and Okinawa. He was employed at the Boone Dairy for more than 40 years, then worked in the maintenance department of the Eastern Star Masonic Home for 10 years. He was co-founder of the Boone Underwater Rescue Unit. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 817, United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, the Boone Bowling League and the Loyal Order of Moose. In earlier years, he was active as a Boy Scout leader and in the Boone Little Theater. His hobbies included antique chair caning, bird watching, hulling walnuts, crossword puzzles and carpentry.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Barbara Murphy; one granddauther, Angela Anderson; and three brothers, Dallas, Joseph and Ray. Survivors include his wife; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Tom and Janis, B. Mark, Kevin and Nancy, and Brian and Mary Kay, all of Boone; one daughter, Denise Anderson-Laws of Lafayette, IN; one son-in-law, Bernard Murphy of Des Moines; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Seil of Boone; one brother and sister-in-law, Elwyn and Beverly Anderson of Vancouver, WA; 11 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.

The body has been cremated.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Marion Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barbara Dinnen officiating. Burial of the cremains with military honors by the Boone Veterans Council will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Pilot Mound Cemetery.

Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, Boone, today from 8 to 9 a.m. and at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
