Verdine Viola Bergling, 92, of Mesa, AZ, passed away on February 10, 2017. She was born March 24, 1924, to Ed and Louise(Tonsfeldt) Shell in Boone, Iowa, and was the eldest of ten children. Her first job was with Northwestern Bell. While there she was encouraged by a co-worker to write to her brother who was a First Lieutenant in the Army overseas. This eventually led to her marriage to Hershel Bergling in August 1946. The couple settled in Boone, where she became a full time wife and mother of two. In 1962 the family moved to Mesa, AZ, and Verdine began working for JC Penney. She retired in 1987 after 25 years. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Loren (Mary) Bergling, Connie (Don) Hook, both of Mesa, AZ and five grandchildren, a brother, Mahlon, sisters, Iola, Jane, Mary, Fran, Joyce and sister-in-law, Alice. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved late husband of 24 years, Hershel, who passed away in February, 1970 and a sister and brother and infant siblings. A private service will be held at Green Acres Cemetery, Scottsdale.
