(December 19, 1920 - September 18, 2012)

Mildred N. Nickell, age 91, of Boone, died September 18, 2012, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home. Following her wishes, her body has been cremated.

A visitation with her family will begin at 12 noon on Friday, September 21, 2012, at the Chapel of the Eastern Star Masonic Home.

A Memorial Service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Phil Webb officiating.

Burial of her cremains will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery at a later date.

Born December 19, 1920, to Gus and Manda (Korch) Knezevich, in Boone, Iowa, Mildred graduated from Boone High School in 1939 and later graduated from the Iowa Beauty School in Des Moines where she taught junior class members.

She worked for many years at the Bon Ton Beauty Shop in Boone.

On February 10, 1945, Mildred married William A. Nickell of Boone. Together, they made Boone their home.

Over the years, she volunteered her time and energy as a Blue Bird and Camp Fire group leader, home room mother, and president of the Bryant School PTA.

She was a charter member of the Boone County Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary.

During her time as an active member, Mildred volunteered over 7000 hours of her time to the hospital.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. and a 48-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Mildred was a 50-plus year member of the First United Methodist Church in Boone.

For over 25 years, she participated in a knitting group at the church that provided hats and mittens to children in Boone County.

She was well known for her knitted afghans and Christmas stockings. Mildred loved working with her hands.

Over the years, she pursued ceramics, caning chairs, oil painting, and knitting.

She also made mints for receptions and weddings and enjoyed cooking and canning.

Mildred thoroughly enjoyed being with family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter Sandra L. Puntenney and husband Keith of Boone and San Antonio, Texas; two grandsons Jason A. Fawcett and wife Amy of San Antonio, Texas, and Matthew W. Puntenney of Boone; a great-granddaughter Olivia K. Fawcett of San Antonio, Texas.

She is also survived by her sister Rebecca H. Peterson of Boone and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, three sisters, and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to publicly express their gratitude for the care and genuine affection provided to Mildred by the staff of the Eastern Star Masonic Home over the last several years, and to the Iowa Hospice staff who have been a part of her life for the past year.

In lieu of flowers, it was Mildred’s wish that memorials be made to the Boone County Hospital Foundation or the First United Methodist Church of Boone.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets. ~ The Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Boone, Iowa Thurs 18 Sept 2012.
