CHARLES STODDARD
Obituary - Oskaloosa Evening Herald, May 21, 1897

Charles Stoddard was born in Watertown, Conn., November 25, 1818. He married June 20, 1842 to Mary E. Stoddard, who died in Mahaska County, Iowa, August 27, 1878. They had four children, two of whom are still living - Theresa M., wife of J.M. Fancher, and Mary G., widow of H.M. Capper.

He remained in Connecticut till past twenty-three years of age, when he came west to Gaanga County, Ohio. In the year 1838 he came to Henry County, Iowa, where he remained until 1845, when he removed to Mahaska County where he lived till the removal of both his daughters to Boone County, Iowa, where he has resided with them for the past seven years.

He died on May 8, 1897, at the residence of his eldest daughter, Theresa, in Woodward, Iowa, after an illness of a week during which he suffered severely. He was laid, by his request, in Peoples Cemetery beside his grandchild, baby Esther Fancher, who had preceded him less than six months.

The services were conducted as nearly as possible as he had requested. When the casket was laid away it was covered with the floral tributes of the loving friends among whom he had lived.
