FRIENDS PAY LAST TRIBUTE TO GEO. BRIGGS
Veteran Mail Carrier Laid to Rest Sunday
Was Resident of County Since 1874
Mr. Briggs Was Born in Valparaiso, Ind., 1852 and End Came at His Home Here Thursday Last, Buried in Linwood Cemetery.

The relatives and friends of the last George Briggs and patrons of the Mail routes which he carried faithfully for a number of years, paid their last tribute of respect Sunday afternoon at the services which were held at the Lawrence funeral home.
The Rev. L.E. Viets, pastor of the First Baptist Church, gave a fine message of consolation based on Ecclesiastics 7.2. The music was furnished by Mrs. Ray Keigley and Mrs. Clarence Jennings who sang, "Does Jesus Care" and "The Old Rugged Cross" and Mrs. Lucy McPherson who sang "The City Foursquare," the same Hymn she had Sung for the late Mrs. Briggs. Miss Sara Perrine played the accompaniments.
The beautiful floral tributes from the many friends and associates of the deceased were in charge of Mrs. H. Moore and Mrs. Bessie Anderson.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Anderson of Carroll, nephew and niece of the deceased, were among those from out of town attending the services.
The pallbearers were fellow rural route mail carriers of Mr. Briggs, Viz: Messers. Ed Friedley, Carlos Capps, Theo. Moore, Dan McConnell, Peter Mc Donald and A. Sparks.
Interment was made in Linwood Park Cemetery, east.
His Life Sketch
George W Briggs was the eldest child of Silas Briggs, A native of New York state, and Obedience Ludington Briggs, a native of Canada. He was born Oct. 5, 1852 at Valparaiso, Ind. and there grew to manhood. He was married to Anna M. Bushore, at Valparaiso, Ind. in 1871. Two years later, in the fall of 1874, he came to Iowa, riding one horse and leading another, thus prepared to start farming which he followed for several years after settling in Boone.
His wife and child came a little later in the same fall and Mr. Briggs has resided in Boone and vicinity ever since. In 1901 he became a substitute mail carrier, later becoming a regular carrier, and continued a most faithful employee of the U.S. mail service as a mail carrier until he was pensioned
a couple of years ago.
His wife Anna M. Briggs, died July 3, 1921. He was married to Rhoda Wilson, Nov. 30 1923, who survives him. Two children of his first wife survive him: Mrs. Elizabeth Read and Levi M. Briggs both of this city. Four children preceded him in death: Clara, Ida, Carrie and Frank.
Mr Briggs was the oldest of a family of eight children and he was the last of four brothers and is survived by 2 sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Brady and Mrs. Ed Bushore, of this city, and Mrs. Geo. Kirk of Kansas City, Kans.
The father and mother, S.M. and Obedience Briggs died here in 1899. Mr. Briggs died at his home 1521 Tama street, Thursday Nov. 12, 1925 from heart trouble.
