Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, St. Cloud for Shyrl J. Strang, age 82, of Waite Park, who died Monday at the St. Cloud Hospital. Rev. Roman Spors will officiate. Private burial will be at Culver Cemetery, Brookston, MN. Friends may visit from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Arrangements were made by Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Homes, Sauk Rapids.
Shyrl J. Strang was born Dec. 11, 1926 in Brookston, MN to Karl & Jessica (Tester) Eklund. She married James R. Strang on June 29, 1946 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Duluth. They lived in Boyne City, MI, Ely, MN where they raised their family, St. Cloud, MN, Boone, IA, and Faribault, MN. They retired to Manhattan Beach near Crosslake. Later Shyrl moved back to Duluth and finally to Waite Park. Shyrl was the Youth Choir Director at St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Cloud from 1968-1973. She also was Choir Director in Boone, IA, Faribault, MN, and Emily, MN. Shyrl was a piano teacher for many years. Shyrl enjoyed family, youth groups, directing choirs, singing and playing the piano.
Survivors include her sons and daughters, Thomas (Patricia) Strang of St. Cloud, John "Jack" (Nobbi) Strang of Alameda, CA, Mary Strang of Los Angeles, CA, and Kathy (Leo) Lara of Columbia Heights; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Shyrl was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; brother, Carl Eklund; and sisters, Gladys McKissick, Gwyn Maturi, and Audrey Eklund.
