Donald Eugene Sherman, age 64, of Boone died Tuesday, March 24, surrounded by family and friends at home after a long battle with leukemia.
Don was born August 15, 1944, the son of Chancey Sr. and Mary (Morman) Sherman in Emmetsburg. He attended Emmetsburg schools and went on to work as a brick mason in both Rippey and Boone. He was a longtime employee of Eldon Krug Construction in Boone. He later owned and operated Sherman Construction and snow removal.
He enjoyed traveling to the lakes area in northwest Iowa and spending time with his twelve grandkids. He was known for his love of buffalo, both collecting memorabilia and raising livestock.
Don was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife and companion of twenty-five years, Beverly "Teddy" Elsberry-Sherman, six children and five siblings. Children include Harlow Sherman and friend Diane of Arizona; Shayne Farringer and wife Lisa of Nebraska; Kevin Farringer and wife Julie of Nebraska; Shannon King and friend Eric Gewecke of Nebraska; Bobbi Disbrowe and husband Matt of Boone; and Chad Elsberry and wife Vikki of Ames. Siblings include Jerry and Carol Sherman of Pella; John Sherman of Forest City; Chancey Jr. and Bonnie Sherman of Adair; Betty Rosensteel (Sherman) of Garner; and Bob and Ruth Schubert of Marshalltown. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family.
Funeral services will be held at the Boone Biblical Memorial Church at 921 West 2nd Street in Boone, Friday, March 27, at 1:00 p.m. Chaplain Henrietta Klarenbeek will officiate.
Burial will be held on Saturday, March 28, at the City of Graettinger Cemetery in Graettinger, Iowa, at 11:00 a.m.
Visitation will be held at the Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets of Boone on Thursday, March 26, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. where family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday at the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., then at the church from 11:30 a.m. to the service time.
Memorials may be given to the family, to be used at their discretion.
