John William Gauger, age 90, a longtime Boone resident, passed away on December 18, 2008, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home. His wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be Monday, December 22, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Phil Webb officiating. Burial of his cremains will be at a later date in the Linwood Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Church one hour before the service.
John was born in Humboldt, Iowa, on July 28, 1918, the son of Walter and Ermina (Gauger) Zobrosky. He married Margaret Mary Quinn on August 23, 1942. He worked numerous years in road construction with Morgan Construction and Welp McCarten of Fort Dodge and retired at the age of 80 from Des Moines Asphalt Company. John enjoyed his life's work plus being there for his family and friends. He had a special interest in his flowers, especially roses, and he liked deer hunting and fishing. In earlier years, he liked to play cards and travel, and he and his wife enjoyed dancing at Lake Robbins and the Val Air Ballroom.
John was preceded in death his parents, two sisters, Emila Sheker and Bernadine Cameron, and three brothers, Robert, Gilbert, and Herbert Zobrosky. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret of Boone; a son, Jim Gauger of Ankeny; a daughter Jean Torkildson and husband John of Boone; four granddaughters: Julie Rozeboom and husband Paul of Waukee, Jody Larson and husband Gary of Albion, Kristina Schaben and husband Jason of Nevada, and Chelsea Gauger of Ames; seven great grandchildren: Andrew and Jonathan Rozeboom, Dylan, Kacee, and Hope Larson, and Dylan and Samantha Schaben; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to establish a memorial fund at a later date.
