Roswell Don Elsberry 1938-2004

Roswell Don Elsberry, 65, Chariton, formerly of Boone, died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, of heart failure. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at the Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story streets, Boone, with Don Howard to officiate. Burial will be in the Mineral Ridge Cemetery west of Ridgeport.

Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, with family present to receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to the time of service.

He was born July 6, 1938, in Boone to Albert Stephen and Pearl Harriett (Gibbons) Elsberry. He attended school in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1957. He married Audrey Marie Wahman in 1959 in Boone.

He and his brother, Roswald, were self-employed working with dry wall in construction in Ames and surrounding Boone County areas.

He also did farm work and yard work where he had lived in Dayton, Fort Dodge, Jewell, Des Moines, Waterloo and Boone. He worked at the Des Moines Super Valu warehouse and the Piggly Wiggly warehouse in Waterloo, loading semi-trailer trucks at both locations.

Roswell served in the National Guard of Iowa. He was a member of the Church of the Open Bible in Boone when he was young and was a long time deacon of his church. He attended the Cornerstone Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Boone. He was a member of the Des Moines Township 4-H Club, spending eight years in 4-H. He showed dairy cattle at the Boone County Fair and the Iowa State Fair. He enjoyed doing yard work, roller skating and horseback riding.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his nephew Clark Edson, his two brothers-in-law Dean Hall and Robert Edson, his brother Charles and his twin brother Roswald. Survivors include his three sons Bret Elsberry, Jeffrey Elsberry and Curtis Elsberry, all of California; his daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Art McChesney of California; six grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Allen Henning of Boone, Shirley Ann Edson of Boone, and Patricia and Claire Mason of Boone; a sister-in-law, Shirley Alberta Elsberry of Waterloo; uncle and aunt Roswell and Stella Gibbons of Boone; and numerous nieces, nephews and more relatives.

Memorials may be made to the family to be used at their discretion.

Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, 503 Story St., Boone, is in charge of arrangements.
