Funeral services for Dean M. Ohlson, 83, Ogden, were Monday, Oct. 9, 2006 at Community United Methodist Church, Ogden, with Rev. Paul Evans officiating.
Mr. Ohlson died Thursday, Oct. 5 at Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames.
Casket bearers were Mark Platt, Daryl Peterson, Mark Trueblood, Dick Smith, Mark Gustafson and Hans Boehm. Honorary casket bearers were Kenny Webber, John Heineman, John Boehm, Dr. E. E. Linder, Herb Doden, Francis Platt and Gary Paulsen.
Cathy Aldrich, organist, accompanied Bill Grieser in singing "The Twenty-third Psalm," and the congregation in singing "Hymn of Promise" and "Because He Lives."
Dean Ohlson was born Aug. 22, 1923 at Ogden, the son of Edgar A. and Ezma (Melott) Ohlson. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Ogden High School. Dean then enrolled at the University of Iowa in the College of Pharmacy Program.
Following his education, Dean enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Medical Corp during WWII in the Philippine Islands.
He married Lois Swindler Aug. 14, 1948 at the Mission Covenant Church in Ogden. In 1953 he established Ohlson Drug in Ogden. He retired in 1986 when he sold the business.
Dean was a member of Community United Methodist Church where he was active in many church activities and served on several church boards. He was active in the Ogden School District, serving on various committees and also served on the Ogden Community Development Committee. Dean served several terms as the President of the Boone Golf and Country Club. Following his retirement, he volunteered at the SCORE Office in Des Moines. He was an avid reader and enjoyed golfing and manicuring his yard. Dean was an Iowa Hawkeye, Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.
Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Ogden; four children, David and his wife Donna Ohlson of Ogden; Nancy and her husband Mark Ness of Chicago, Ill., Holly and her husband Dan Hagg of Algona, and Mark and his wife Melanie Ohlson of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one niece; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Burial was at Glenwood Cemetery, Ogden, with military graveside rites conducted by the Edward J. Maas American Legion post #55.
Carson Funeral Home, Ogden, was in charge of arrangements.
