Harold G. Schmickley, 97, Eastern Star Masonic Home, died Oct. 30, 2003.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Boone. The Revs. Phil Webb and Jessica Johnston will officiate.
Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery.

Mr. Schmickley, son of Gottlieb and Emma (Heuer) Schmickley, was born on April 27, 1906 in Lafayette.

He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1922 and from Coe College in 1926.

In 1926 he began teaching in Palo.

On Feb. 18, 1933, he married Margaret James in Cedar Rapids.

He was a high school teacher in Palo and Keystone, a principal at Scranton and a superintendent at Lanesboro, Jordan, Lohrville and Dayton.

He coached and refereed boys' and girls' baskeball. He coached and umpired throughout his 25-year teaching career.

In 1951 he became assistant executive secretary of the Iowa High School Athletic Association in Boone, a position he held until his retirement in 1971. He served for many years on the baseball rules committee of the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations and received national recognition for his contributions to the High School Baseball Rule Book.

After retiring he became involved with the American Association of Retired Persons. He was one of the organizers of the Boone County Chapter of AARP and he served as one of its first presidents. In 1973, he and his wife became the chapter's tour organizers, planners and guides. Over the next 18 years, they led hundreds of AARP members on bus trips.

In 1991 he retired from his AARP avocation. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Mount Olive Lodge 79, Order of the Eastern Star, High-12, and AARP.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one brother and one sister.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Kae Schmickley of Cedar Rapids, Ron and Judy Schmickley of Las Vegas, Nev., Dennis and Marilyn Schmickley of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Verne and Beki Schmickley of Raleigh, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2:30 to 4:30 and 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of the Eastern Star Masonic Home. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Visitation will continue from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church and 8:30 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes Association.
