Walter Smalley, 76, of 1827 190th St. died Nov. 20, 2003, of a heart ailment at the Boone County Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Open Bible with Rev. Phil Waldo officiating.

Following the service his body will be cremated and a graveside service and burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Walnut Grove Cemetery southeast of Ames.

He was born in Boone County on July 19, 1927, the son of Virgil and Edith (Keenan) Smalley. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1945. He married Betty (Hill) Harker in Indianola on Jan. 24, 1953. He farmed in Boone County and raised cattle. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and the West Central Co-op.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Marion Harker.

He is survived by his wife Betty of Boone; two sons, Ray and wife Belinda Smalley of Cambridge and Bill and wife Cindy Smalley of Pilot Mound; a daughter, Candie McAlpine of Boone; three stepsons, Dennis Harker of West Des Moines, Daryl Harker of Perry, and Gary Harker and his wife Jingle of Warner Robins, Ga.; a brother, Clyde Smalley and his wife, Glenda of Boone; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth & Marshall streets. The family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m.

Visitation continues from 8 until 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel and then noon until the time of service at the church.

Memorials may be given to the family to be used at its discretion.
