Shirley Clarke, 62, 3715 Emerald Drive, Ames, died Friday at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames of heart failure. She was born June 7, 1939, in Polk County near Carlisle, the daughter of Charles and Ethel (Gordon) Hines. She married Tom Clarke June 7, 1957, in Boone.

She spent her youth in Port Townsend, WA and returned to Iowa in her teen years. She graduated from Boone High School in 1957. In earlier years, she was employed with the former Mutual Benefit Company of Ames and she was a secretary to the loan officer at Union Story Bank in Ames. She later worked as a secretary and payroll clerk for Todd & Sargent, and later was the secretary for John L. McKinney, then the municipal judge for the City of Ames. In 1973, she was the legal secretary for McKinney when he went into private practice, retiring in 2000 because of health conditions. She was the first bookkeeper for the Ames Little League and aided in its organization. She later served on the board of directors for the Little League. Her hobbies included reading, flower gardening and landscaping.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a half brother.

Survivors include her husband; one son and daughter-in-law, Derek and Danelle Clarke of Fridley, MN; and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, Boone, with the Rev. Lyle Greiner officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery in Ames.

Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel Monday until 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues Tuesday at the funeral chapel from 8 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Ames Little League.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
